Leahy: Sotomayor will be confirmed

Associated Press - May 27, 2009 7:15 AM ET

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Sen. Patrick Leahy says there may be some controversy about President Barack Obama's pick for a new Supreme Court justice, but the Vermont Democrat has not doubt Sonia Sotomayor will be on the court when its next term starts in October.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will hold hearings on the nomination, tells the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus it's less a question of whether Sotomayor will be confirmed, but how.

Some Republican groups already have begun sending out fundraising letters raising concerns about Obama's first Supreme Court nominee, questioning whether she'll let her personal views color her legal reasoning.
