The theme at the farmers' market in Winooski Thursday was buying local.
Karolyn Lalumiere grew up on a dairy farm and now grows vegetables. Lalumiere says farmers' markets account for most of her business. She sells veggies at up to ten different markets every week.
"My three boys actually grew up on farmers markets," Lalumiere said.
Lalumiere says lately she has been coming home with less produce, thanks to 3 Squares VT, which is the state's food stamp program.
"There is an increase what people are buying because of that," Lalumiere said.
Which is about to get even better for farmers like Lalumiere thanks to harvest health coupons. They double the amount of money low-income families can spend at farmer's markets, up to $10 a visit.
"That is really one of the goals of harvest health is to make sure that people have access to healthy local foods," 3 Squares VT Angela Smith-Dieng said.
Right now about 80,000 Vermonters use the program.
"That's more than one in eight Vermonters," Smith-Dieng said.
