Jobs Elusive For Young Adults

Posted: Updated:

Burlington-According  to the Labor Department, the number of young Americans, those age 18-24, without a job stands at 53.4 % a number that rivals the post World War II era.  Beyond those examples, there has been no other recession in which the unemployment, for that age group, has risen about 50 %.

Unemployment rates are putting the squeeze on recent grads, many of whom are still looking for a job and those that are preparing to toss the tassel.

"They are encountering competition not only from their own age group but a lot of experienced people who have lost their jobs in their work force," said Jed Deming a UVM alum and retired from the financial industry.

Deming says students will have to work harder and smarter for jobs that are more elusive. Students we spoke with today say they are trying to stay positive. ‘It's not that there are no jobs there are just fewer jobs," said Tom Irving, a senior at UVM.

Here is some advice for those young adults that find themselves in a slump between graduation and employment.

"Go out and volunteer, because that goes a long way, and who knows what doors that opens along the way," said Deming.
