Vermont Senate President Pro Tem Peter ShumlinVermont's Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin says he has his sights set on state government's top spot.
Shumlin announced his candidacy for governor Monday in Williston. He is the fifth democrat to join the race.
The state senator says he thinks job creation is what will pull the state and country out of its economic slump. One way to accomplish that is through renewable energy. Shumlin says at this time, he opposes Vermont Yankee's license extension. A move that's drawing criticism.
"For those that are skeptics on that question what's going to convince them is there's no doubt about it, that's were the jobs are," Shumlin said.
Shumlin may be a running as a democrat but he calls himself a fiscal conservative. He says he has a three-step plan to save the economy: control spending, enhance revenues and do more with less.
"We're in this to win and I know we can win," Shumlin said.
The list of candidates includes democratic state senators Susan Bartlett and Doug Racine, former senator Matt Dunne, Secretary of State Deb Markowitz and Republican Lt. Governor Brian Dubie.
