Meals for Kids During Summer

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of Vermont kids will eat healthy lunches this summer that they might not be able to get otherwise.

But the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger worries what tens of thousands of other kids are eating.

Marissa Parisi is the group's executive director. She wants to make sure kids don't got hungry in the summer.

"We know that if kids are well fed, they have good nutrition they have less behavior problems. They do better in school and they have more chance at success than kids that don't," said Parisi.

She said the federal government picks up the lunch tab in Winooski and 100 other programs around the state in the summer.

"Kids are eating a well-balanced, healthy meal that includes veggies, protein and milk everyday," said Parisi.

Parisi is happy the program serves 5,000 Vermont kids. But she worries because during the school year six-times that, 30,000 Vermont kids, rely on school meals.  There is a 25,000 gap in kids and Parisi wonders what those kids are doing in the summer.

Nicole LaPlante is going into 4th grade and is in a summer program in Winooski. She is enjoying the free lunch of hot dogs, coleslaw and watermelon.

"It's good," said LaPlante.

LaPlante likes healthy food and says today watermelon was her favorite.

The Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger hopes every kid who needs it also gets a slice.
