An old refrigerator or freezer sitting in your garage maybe costing you a lot more money than you're aware of. The majority use up to four times the electricity of a newer model.
For the past year, Efficiency Vermont has working to get these wasteful appliances off the power grid, saving customers up to $150 a year on utility costs.
With the help of JACO Environmental, the program has recycled 1800 units in the past 12 months. It's a free pick-up service offering a $30 incentive.
But for a limited time, the reward has been boosted to $50. This offer is good through July and August.
"It helps the environment because it's more energy efficient, my new one. And they're giving me $50, bottom line!" said Donna Maynard of South Burlington, who recycled her 30-year old refrigerator Thursday morning.
In addition to cost savings, recycling old refrigerators also keeps ten tons of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere, and stops any toxins from entering landfills.
Fridges must be operational, and there is a limit of two units per household. Efficiency Vermont's services are paid for by a small tax included in state residents electric bills.
