Nearly 50 UVM Students Treated For Illness

Posted: Updated:

The University of Vermont is dealing with a possible outbreak of gastroenteritis.  The school's medical clinic says over the past 48 hours nearly 50 students reported illnesses associated with the virus.  Calls are coming from all over the campus.

The medical staff doesn't suspect its from food. They assume it's a bacterial issue.

Susan Schoenfeld, of the Vermont Health Department, says they're not worried this will become an outbreak.

"Other than keeping track, making sure it's nothing more serious than this," Schoenfeld said. "Advising people and the measures they can do around hand washing and hygiene those are the way we minimize it."

Schoenfeld says symptoms of gastroenteritis are nausea, vomitting, diarrhea and dehydration. She adds the best way to avoid this illness is frequently washing hands and avoid sharing food, or drink, with others.
