CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Deer hunting is expected to be good next month in southern New Hampshire, but state officials aren't certain whether the economy will help or hurt.
Randy Curtis of the state Fish and Game Department says more people may hunt this fall to save money on groceries. On the other hand, the economy could keep some prospective hunters home because of the cost of licenses and food and travel.
Last year was the state's second-best deer season ever, with just under 13,600 deer taken. But sales of hunting licenses have been in a long-term decline.
The regular hunting season begins Nov. 12. The archery season began last month, and the muzzleloader season will be phased in starting Saturday.
