If one lawmaker has his way, Vermont could be next to allow gay marriage. Democratic State Senator John Campbell of Windsor wants to re-introduce a bill when the legislature convenes in January.
He says a commission studied the issue across the state and found Vermonters would accept gay marriage. Still, Campbell calls the issue a political land mine.
"We would not be saying different religious organizations would have to recognize these same sex marriages. It's a secular issue; an equal-rights issue," Campbell said.
Campbell doesn't think the bill would go very far with Governor Jim Douglas' support.
