It will be the largest installation of solar panels in the state of Vermont. "It will pretty much use the entire roof," said Paul Comey, VP of Environmental Affairs of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
Nearly 600 solar panels will be installed this spring at the Green Mountain Coffee facility in Waterbury, Vermont. When at its peak, the company will generate about 100,000 watts of power.
To compare, that's about the same energy used to turn on 1,667 60-watt light bulbs, like the the average kind used in your home.
The panels will be a small but valuable portion of the company's overall power usage.
"It's a little more than one percent, but to put that into perspective, it's ten-fold what the country does around solar," said Comey.
Green Mountain Power is a partner in the project and says it will contribute to their overall goal.
"We're looking for innovative ways to really help boost solar in Vermont," said Dorothy Schnure of Green Mountain Power.
And this project will also work towards a much bigger picture for renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
"We need to look at the collective renewable generation of the state, not just individual, so it's not about who has the biggest, it's together, what's our total output in renewables and what can we do to make that larger?" said Comey.
The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of the summer.
