Study: 1 in 50 U.S. Kids Homeless

A study released Tuesday by the National Council on Family Homelessness reported one in 50 American children is homeless.

The report card ranked states based on their amount, handling and risk of becoming homeless as a child.  Vermont ranked 10th, while New Hampshire came in 2nd and New York 38th

Rita Markley, executive director of Burlington-based Committee on Temporary Shelter, said the study is important because it puts the spotlight on child homelessness, but finds it lacking.

"This study is based on numbers from 2005, and the world is very different now," Markley said.

Last winter, Markley said the Burlington area had 86 homeless children.  As of Jan. 15, 2009, there are 265 homeless kids.

"Some are very resilient," she said.  "But others, they're just already worn down."
