It's a badge of honor in Vermont to claim to be green. Some companies take that claim more seriously than others. Like the newly established "Vermont Clothing Co." of St. Albans. What makes Vermont Clothing Co. special is that they not only sell environmentally friendly products, but their factory runs entirely on cow power. "The electricity, 100% comes from cow power, a renewable energy source," said Jay Cummings, owner of the Vermont company.
A variety of clothes are made at the factory, "Right now we're doing t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, uh we have a great line just introduced last week of infant clothing." Jay added there's a lot of products to choose from, but for him its about much more than just selling a few shirts,"I'm not in the business so much of selling Vermont T-shirts, I'm in the business of promoting Vermont as a green clean state."
Outdoor Gear Exchange is one of the local businesses that carries the Vermont Clothing Co., and for them, partnering with the local Vermont company made perfect sense. "It was a really good fit for us, yeah, and hearing that they use cow power as well was a really great fit," said Joshua Stephen the head buyer for the Vermont Gear Exchange. With a lot of state pride, Joshua says, its not just tourists who are buying up Vermont brands. "Originally I think we were thinking it was kind of geared towards tourists, but what we've seen is that all types of people are purchasing them." You can find a apparel from the Vermont Clothing Company at the Outdoor Gear Exchange, and the Vermont Gift Barn, but Cummings says consumers will soon find their products all across the state and beyond.
