VT Dairy Drive Helps Local Farmers

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of Vermonters helped struggling dairy farmers fight the industry crisis at Saturday's dairy drive in Milton.

Grocery shoppers were encouraged to buy milk at the Hannaford in Milton. The milk was then transported to the Vermont Food Bank to help needy families. The food bank said demand is up 40 percent and they need donations.

While demand is up, milk prices remain low. A problem dairy farmers say is putting them out of business.

"Right now, the farm's in crisis," local farmer Lawerence Rowley said.

The food bank said the milk will definitely help families once school is out for the summer.

"Kids are home and they're not drinking as many dairy products, they're not drinking as much milk as they would be in school," spokesperson Emily Shipman said.

The next dairy drive is July 11 at the Burlington Hannaford and Price Chopper locations. The last one is Aug. 8 in Brattleboro.
