Children keep Norma Jean Willard busy and happy.
She says they're a big reason why when Norma Jean and her husband began struggling financially last year, and needed help to feed them, she didn't hesitate to ask for it.
"When you have children it's not just about you anymore, you have to reach out," said Willard.
There about 80,000 people who take part in Vermont's food assistance program called 3 Squares Vermont.
It helps families afford the basics, and has become increasingly important in a struggling economy.
"We have seen a significant increase in the number of people who need help or support buying food in the home," said Marissa Parisi, the Executive Director with the Vermont Campaign To End Childhood Hunger.
When it comes to hunger, experts say children are the most vulnerable, affecting one out of every four kids nationwide.
"Children are doing things like hoarding snacks and putting it in their pocket, or actually asking their childcare provider if they can bring food home with them," said Parisi.
"It's really difficult when we go on school break and I know those kids are going home to empty cupboards and empty fridges," said Doug Davis, Director of Food Service for the Burlington School District.
To help, the Burlington school district has made free breakfasts and lunches available this year to students who need them because, experts say, hunger is a growing problem we all pay for.
"Kids that don't get the proper nutrition tend to fall behind their peers at school they have more health challenges," said Parisi.
The state has helped by making the 3 squares program more accessible to people.
Norma Jean says the economy is helping to shed the stigma of receiving food stamps.
"You don't have to be proud. You're here because you need help," she said.
