About 100 people braved bone chilling temperatures in Burlington Wednesday to help raise awareness about a growing problem.
The Committee on Temporary Shelter, also known as COTS, held its annual candlelight vigil for the homeless.
Volunteers read the names and a brief description of people without a home to put a face to the issue.
Organizers say they hold the event at this time of the year for a good reason.
"We try to make it as close to the winter solstice as possible because it's the darkest night of the year and often very cold and it's a very poignant reminder of what it's like if you don't have a place to stay, said COTS Executive Director Rita Markley.
Organizers say COTS continues to see more people needing help this year than 2008, which was a record setting year.
