The University of Vermont has received a $5 million donation to support a state-based program working to integrate technology into middle schools.
The donation, announced Monday, is from the Tarrant Foundation. It will go towards an innovative new program known as I-LEAP (Learning and Engaging Adolescents Project).
The program will provide schools with hardware and software and training to help teachers integrate technology into the school day.
Deborah Tarrant, of the Foundation, says in today's classroom, students are asked to put away their cell phones, iPods and laptops.
"We've got to acknowledge that their lives revolve around technology outside of the classroom," said Tarrant. "We can't expect them to show up for school, power-down and then stayed engaged."
The program was developed at UVM funding from the Tarrant Foundation and teachers at middle schools in Burlington and Milton.
