A fire that destroyed a home in Milton early Monday might have started in the garage, according to Milton Fire Chief Don Turner.
Crews were called to a home near the intersection of Sanderson and Street Brook roads just after 10 a.m.
When fire crews arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the house.
"Initial crews were confronted with heavy fire conditions on the first floor—the basement, garage and first floor of the residence," said Turner. "We knocked it down as soon as we could, but the fire advanced up to the attack."
Turner said no one was at home during the time of the fire. Fire crews managed to save most of the pets in the home.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but does not appear to be suspicious. No injuries were reported.
Milton was assisted by firefighters from Georgia, Colchester and South Hero.
