New Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Creates Controversy

Posted: Updated:

South Burlington, Vermont - "No one can resist my Schweddy balls," said Alec Baldwin.

That Saturday Night Live skit with Alec Baldwin is more than a decade old.

But it's breathing new life, after Ben and Jerry's created "Schweddy Balls."

A vanilla based ice cream filled with fudge covered rum and malt balls.

"We're hearing great feedback from Saturday night live. They're very supportive, both folks of Saturday Night Live and the players like Alec Baldwin and Ana Gasteyer, both helpful just in getting the word out there," said Ben & Jerry's Grand Poobah of Public Relations Sean Greenwood.

The name has exploded.

Since word got out it's been a trending topic worldwide on social media sites like Twitter.

With a name like "Schweddy balls," you have to ask yourself, is it going too far or is it just downright funny?

"I would feel a little uncomfortable buying something with that name. I don't think it's incredibly appropriate. I don't want to have to explain to her exactly what that means," said Nicole Vance.

"It might not be appropriate for kids and young kids and that's kind of hard to explain to kids but I think it's really funny and I don't have a problem with it," said Bridget Levine.

Ben and Jerry's officials say the overwhelming feedback they've received is positive.

After all, they say, humor is part of their core values.

"When you see our flavors like "Karamel Sutra," "Half Baked," there's a double entendre that goes along with those names so we do try to poke a little fun," said Greenwood.

With Alec Baldwin set to host the season premier of SNL later this month, Ben and Jerry's can only hope to see the decade old skit come back to life.

The ice cream is available until the holidays.

But you might have a hard time finding it.

Price Chopper officials say they won't be selling it because of the name.
