Fairfax, Vermont- A group of school board members from two Vermont towns met with parents Wednesday night to talk about the benefits of a proposed merger between the Fairfax and Fletcher school districts.
"It'll give us more stability and more flexibility educationally," Fletcher School Board Chair, Betsy Lesnikoski said.
And many parents agree, including Pam Cook. Cook says she likes that the plan would bring all middle school students from the area to one central location.
"I think it will be a good thing for our school to get the kids together earlier and our schools can work better together," Cook said.
Lesnikoski says a merger would not only mean more after school activities and possibly more teachers, but it also has economic benefits. School districts that merge voluntarily receive a tax break from the state.
"It will slightly reduce the per pupil cost," Lesnikoski said.
But Patricia Fondry is not convinced, she believes it will cause overcrowding at BFA Fairfax. The plan would take away the ability people living in Fletcher have to choose a high school.
Instead students would automatically be enrolled in BFA Fairfax.
"They mentioned that they would share programs that are better at one school than the other, but how are they going to do that? There are just too many questions unanswered," Fondry said.
People will have the chance to vote on the merger November 8th.
