The New York Yankees made the playoffs. I'm not upset about that, but rather that the Red Sox are out :( So with no team to root for (except those facing the Rays!) I am left to have the MLB games on as background noise when I'm doing my other meteorological duties.
When watching the Red Sox and Yankees game in late September, I heard the announcers talking about the weather. They mentioned that the day before was a rainout and the teams would be playing a double header.
The announcers went on to explain how the Yankees led the league this year with rain-affected games. The team had 22 games affected by rain. The Yankees had 13 rain delays and 9 postponed games.
Overall Major League Baseball had 51 rain outs in the 2011 regular season. That's the highest total since 1997, when there were 54 postponed games.
And again Saturday New England and the New York area saw their share of rain:
These totals were as of 8 p.m. Saturday. At our station in Colchester, VT we received 0.74". At JFK in New York it was 0.20" since midnight.
Another storm was on the radar Saturday night too, surrounding the New York area. This year the Yankees were subject to a lot of rain storms concentrated over the Northeast. It's just where the rain happened to land this year. I'm sure the Texas Rangers had a very low rainout year because of the droughts the state has suffered.
In fact in New York, the National Weather Service reported Saturday that 59.96 inches of rain (and water equivalent for the snow storms) has fallen this year at Central Park.
This makes 2011 the 7th-wettest year on record at Central Park, New York. It is also 22.29" ABOVE average!
When I was listening to that game in late September, I also heard the announcers comment on another topic. They mentioned that the Yankees' G.M. Joe Girardi is "one credit" away from getting a degree in meteorology. I'm not sure what they meant by the one credit or how he's achieving it, but I thought it was interesting.
The rain hasn't stopped the Yanks. They led the A.L. East division and will probably find success in the playoffs. Looks like I can't send some poor weather to play against them :)
