Montpelier, Vermont - Vermont state officials are looking into keeping nonviolent offenders out of jail as a possible remedy to an exploding prison budget.
Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says the high number of pre-trial inmates has already set his department up for a dive into the red. The 400 pre-trial inmates in jail Monday were only 12 short of the all-time record.
Pallito's quoted in the Rutland Herald as saying the upward trend will continue unless prosecutors, judges and police consider less costly alternatives to prison for nonviolent inmates, who make up about 40% of the state's prison population.
Pallito says he'll push for new laws that require prosecutors and judges to divert nonviolent offenders, as well as those accused of nonviolent crimes, away from jail and into diversion and other alternatives.
