A quick surprise in the forecast today. Just heard of some small hail reported in Enosburg Falls and Swanton, VT areas. While I was expecting showers today, I think this one had a little extra "oomph" to it. Weak (but enough) instability was produced with a morning of abundant sunshine to grow what few showers are out there, into a tall cloud. Freezing heights within the clouds are quite low, only at about 3000'. This instability punching up through this subfreezing layer was enough to generate some small hail from around 11am in these northern VT towns.
Check out this sounding (vertical profile of the atmosphere). Not classically indicative of hail, but you can certainly figure it out.
