Burlington Democratic Caucus Doesn't Produce a Nominee

Posted: Updated:

Burlington, Vermont - Every vote truly mattered during Sunday's Burlington democratic mayoral caucus.

"Total number of votes cast, 1,083. Total necessary to win, 542. Tim Ashe 541, Miro Weinberger 540," said democratic chairman Steve Howard.

What started out as a day filled with excitement for some democrats, ended for others in disappointment.

"Yes I gasped. I said oh my God," said Dawn Moskowitz.

"I'm not sure if any person in this room expected that," said David Lanes.

Jason Lorber bowed out of the race after it became clear he didn't have enough votes to win.

Then Bram Kranichfeld was eliminated in round two.

That left Tim Ashe and Miro Weinberger.

After learning no one had a majority, democratic leaders pleaded with the packed crowd.

"I'm going to ask you for both your patience, your understanding and maybe your sympathy," said Howard.

So the votes were recounted which showed both candidates had actually received 540 votes.

Democratic leaders decided to suspend the caucus and hold a re-vote within one month.

That means the democratic candidate for Burlington mayor will get a much later start against republican Kurt Wright.

That's something both men say they're not too concerned with.

"You're talking to the guy who ran a 27 day campaign for this while the other guys were in it for 4 months, so no," said Ashe.

"I think what's going to happen here is you're going to have more attention on the 2 of us and whoever emerges will be even stronger coming out," said Weinberger.
