What a weekend it was for me! I traveled over to my alma mater, Lyndon State College, to work with a select group of senior students, and the one and only Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel! Mr. Cantore, also a Lyndon alum, generously returns to LSC each fall to teach a weekend long intensive course in performance and television meteorology. For the third year, I was asked to share some of my knowledge as a new professional to television weathercasting...and gratefully accepted the offer. Also there for the weekend was one of my professors, Dr. Jason Shafer and another local familiar face, WCAX meteorologist, Dan Dowling.
This year, it was just 4 seniors signed up for the course. These students are majoring in atmospheric sciences, who also hope to use their degree as a television meteorologist. The students received invaluable advice about the career of television weathercasting and personal performance advice and critiques from Mr. Cantore, myself, and talent manager, Lou Michaels of Talent Dynamics. The main goals of the weekend, to help stduents improve their work and privide advice that will make them the most qualified for a job in tv meteorology after graduation.
When I was a senior at Lyndon, I also got the chance to be evaluated in this course by Mr. Cantore. I remember it as such an exciting weekend. I was offered critiques and advice that I still refer to to this day. As we all know, it is a challenging time to get a job. The advice offered from this weekend will hopefully make these students more desirable and more competitive in the job market. My hope is that with the advice we provided the next graduating class, they will feel ready to take on the "real world" in May after they walk across the stage and grab their diploma.
