When I came into work today and began forecasting, it didn't exactly feel like Black Friday. The temperature outside was flirting with the 50-degree mark as I carried my bike into the building. I'm still biking in late November in Burlington?! I didn't expect this, but personally I'll take it.
November continues to be the, by far, the warmest month that we've had this 2011 (when comparing the numbers to averages or "normals").
I have my doubts with temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, so I undercut the National Weather Service and model numbers a tad. So there are forecasts out there that are actually WARMER than this projection! Putting this into perspective, the average high from Saturday through Tuesday is 41 degrees in Burlington. Some of these numbers jump 15F over that!
Here's a look at the first 25 days of November at the Burlington International Airport, comparing the observed high temperatures to what the averages are for those days.
That green, declining line is the typical average in Burlington through the first 25 days of the 11th month. The Queen City drops a total of 12 degrees from Nov. 1 through the 30th. While our temperatures (in red) have been on the decline on this chart, they have been SO WARM. Each square represents each day of November so far. 17 of the 25 days have either been at or ABOVE average readings for highs. In the first three and a half weeks, the high @ BTV has averaged 50.8 degrees, compared to a typical number of 46.6.
Now let's get low.
Low temperatures haven't been AS eye-opening, but still rather impressive. Low temperatures have been about 2 degrees above the monthly average to-date. 15 of the 25 days had above-average lows, so not as many 'warm' nights as there were days.
Putting the two numbers together, the average temperature for the month of November so far in Burlington, VT is 42.26 F. That is taking every low and every high temp and averaging them together. That number is usually 39.1 F. It doesn't sound like THAT much of a difference at first, but then take into consideration the all-time warmest November is 44.4 F set in 1948. I have a feeling we won't break the all-time record, but our # in 2011 will probably end up around 43 F, which is very, very mild for this time of year.
*Also a fun note from today (Nov. 25). It is the earliest that the Burlington Int'l Airport has ever had a 0 degree reading (or below) on its record. It dropped to -1 on this date in 1938.
