Moretown Community Mourns Over Family Deaths

Posted: Updated:

Moretown, Vermont- The community of Moretown is still in shock. Three members of the community killed in a head on car crash Thursday.

"When it's somebody you know it just hits where it, you know hurts the most," said Moretown Fire Chief Sean O'Brien.

O'Brien had no idea the call his crew received Thursday night, would be a family they all know far too well.

"It was a propane leak so we couldn't do anything. Couldn't figure out who was in the car or if anyone was in there or not," said O' Brien.

Police say the mini-van crossed the center line and hit the propane truck head on. The fuel spill was so large people nearby had to evacuate their homes. Crews threw sand down to absorb the fuel but even a day later the area still smelled of diesel. O'Brien had no idea three close family friends were involved. All three were killed.

72 year old Judith Grandfield, of Moretown, was driving the mini-van. Her young great-grandsons were also killed. Two-year old Jackson Winters, and his brother 7-month old Jasper. The driver of the propane truck, 33-year old Justin Page of Websterville, was treated for his injuries.

"People knew them, they were very well loved in this community," said Chief O'Brien, "It's going to be very difficult, we are here to help them (family) as much as we can."

The Moretown Fire Department had a debriefing session tonight to talk about their feelings and make sure everyone is mentally doing ok. Meanwhile, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
