12.13.11 Less Than Ideal Conditions for the Gemenid Meteor Shower

The Geminid Meteor Shower might be a bust this year. With a bright moon combined with clouds moving in,  we won't have ideal viewing conditions for the annual meteor display.

The Geminid meteor shower will peak this year on December 13th and 14th. According to earthsky.org, it is a beloved shower, because, as a general rule, it's either the August Perseids or the December Geminids that give us the most prolific display of the year. Unlike many meteor showers, you can usually start watching the Geminids by 9 or 10 p.m. On a dark, moonless night, the Geminid meteor shower often produces 50 or more meteors per hour.  But, this year you'll likely see far fewer due to a bright waning gibbous moon and extensive cloud cover.

Forecast tonight: Few snow showers over northern New York and northern Vermont, otherwise mostly cloudy. Low in the 20s

Forecast tomorrow night: Cloudy with rain or wintry mix developing from the south. Low near 30.
