Is the Lack of Snow Causing Higher Heating Costs?

Burlington, Vermont - A foot or two of snow isn't uncommon this time of year.

But drive through Burlington Wednesday and you'll notice it's bare.

While it's been a mild fall and winter, temperatures this past week have dropped, creating chilly situations for some people.

An issue Efficiency Vermont has noticed.

"Suddenly to have so much wind and so much cold, I think many people feeling that their homes were suddenly very uncomfortable," said Efficiency Vermont Liling Young.

A few years ago Jeff Munger was one of those people.

When it was cold, windy and bare, Munger says he had to use more gas to heat his home.

"There were many times in the winter and colder months that our bill would be way over $200 dollars," said Munger.

He had an insulation problem that was fixed with a new furnace, and other work.

While he didn't blame it on the lack of snow, others do.

But according to Efficiency Vermont that doesn't make a big difference.

"It's a bit of a myth. It helps with the stuff under the ground, It doesn't help as much here above the ground," said Young.

As winter wears on Young says if your home isn't properly insulated it could not only make things cold but freeze pipes and cause other damage.
