Montpelier, Vermont - Last week, Vermont's Attorney General filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in Support of President Obama's Universal Health Care Plan. You may remember that more than 20 states have sued over the plan claiming it is unconstitutional. Now, the President's plan faces the threat of being struck down by the Supreme Court. That got us thinking, what could that mean for a single-payer health care system in Vermont?
"That could pose enormous complications for the State of Vermont," Mike Bertrand a former State leader and Executive Director of the Vermont Republican Party said.
That is because Vermont is relying on nearly $200 million in tax credits from Obama's plan to help pay for its plan.
Also, if Obama's plan is struck down, it could mean a lot of Vermont's resources and money were wasted.
"There's been resources devoted at the Department of Vermont Health Access. Resources devoted at the Vermont Department of Labor," Bertrand said.
And he says the list goes on and on.
We know that all five members of the Green Mountain Care Board, which is charged with creating Vermont's single-payer plan, get paid a grand total of nearly $500,000.
So we asked the Shumlin administration, why would they put so many resources into Green Mountain Care if they did not know if they could pay for it?
Here's what Robin Lunge, Vermont's Director of Health Care Reform said.
"What we do know is that health care costs are rising at an unsustainable rate. We know that for a fact. And we know that we have to do something because if we do nothing, people are not going to be able to afford health care."
