01.25.12 Miss The Aurora? Here's Some Pics!

Posted: Updated:

After a solar radiation storm flashed on the sun Monday, releasing tons of energy and sending it toward Earth, the Northern Lights could be seen early Wednesday morning.

Locally it was overcast during the entire night Tuesday into Wednesday.  The North Country sits pretty low (in terms of latitude) to have a good view of this particular aurora.  However places north (and clearer) had a fantastic sighting.

Here are some pictures.

I searched for these pictures on Twitter.  I didn't use any larger search engines but I'm sure you can find more cool ones.

As a reminder, the aurora happens as charged particles and solar energy passes through space, interacts with Earth's atmosphere and creates an array of differing colors in the upper atmosphere.  The chances to see the Northern Lights get better the closer you are to the poles, because that's where the energy is passing by.  Thanks to our atmosphere, the energy gets bounced around Earth rather than right into it.
