01.30.12 Ski Report Making Turns For The Better

Posted: Updated:

Here's to gearing up for a great February!  As I go through the ski reports, tally the new snow, and update the amount of trails open, I'm pleased to announce most resorts have reported improving conditions in the last 10 days.

The mountains that have really benefited from the one-to-two week weather pattern (dating back to mid-January) are the northern ones.  Areas to the south have not really tapped into the Alberta Clipper moisture like colleagues to the north.  Also we haven't had that nice winter coastal storm (Nor'EastAH) to dump snow on our southern mountains.

Nonetheless even with abnormally mild temperatures, RAIN, and fairly low snow totals, the ski report on this Monday morning is fairing pretty well.  Here's a look at mountains in New York, Vermont, & New Hampshire.

A few places were blessed with a half-foot of powder Sunday night into Monday.  It has been these 'clipper-like-systems' yielding a light and fluffy snow that has kept many mountains optimistic!

Another storm scooting across the Great Lakes will arrive Monday night and spread light snow into Tuesday across the entire area.  While lower elevations will probably see 1-2 inches, mountains will likely see 1-3 inches by Tuesday afternoon.  While it's not a whole lot, it's better than the rain we had last week.

There is one blemish in the forecast and it is Wednesday.  Temperatures are likely to rise into the 30s, even near 40 at the resorts early Wednesday.  This will likely turn any snow showers over to rain showers.  However, I'm not expecting any heavy rain from this.

After Tuesday and Wednesday's storms, the forecast is quiet with temperatures in the teens and twenties Thursday through Sunday.  I am keeping my eyes on a possible storm Sunday.  There are hints that it could be a nice coastal storm with more moisture than recent storms, however I'll believe it when I see it.  The weather pattern as of late has taken storms well to our north and has not been favorable for coastal development.  If anything does change for the better, I'll be sure to let you know :)  Happy Trails,
