South Burlington, Vermont - A South Burlington man came to us because he said he was being nickel and dimed by his cell phone company. That is when we did some digging.
Kevin Donahue first noticed an extra fee on his Verizon Wireless phone bill two years ago. It is something called an administrative charge.
"And I never really got to anyone who could explain the charge fully," Donahue said.
When Donahue got his January bill, he noticed the charge rose from 83 cents to 99 cents. He tried to call Verizon but all he got was an automated message.
"In my explanation to the people I talked to at Verizon, prior to calling the recorded number, I was trying to say that why don't you just put it in my monthly recurring charge. Why hide it over where it's almost into the regulatory fees," Donahue said.
We called Verizon to find out.
A company representative said that the charge is separated from the rest of the bill to make the customers' costs clearer.
He said the administrative charge pays for expenses such as new cell site construction and government mandates, and this year, those costs went up.
The rep also said that Verizon informed its customers about the charge hike in their November and December 2011 bills. Although Donahue says he does not remember getting that notice.
Bottom line, if you want to stay with Verizon, you will have to pay more, whether the company told you ahead of time or not.
If you are concerned about your cell phone bill, you can contact Vermont's Consumer Assistance Program at (800)649-2424 or (802) 656-3183.
