As summer approaches and carnival's come to our area, we're reminded of the horrible tragedy of the amusement park worker who died last year at the Lamoille County Field Days.

Milton, Vermont - Holly Benway's younger sister attends Milton Middle School, which is also connected to the high school. She says she's shocked to hear that a 13-year-old is accused of trying to sexually assault a staff member.

"I don't understand how a 13-year-old would know about something like that or try to do something like that to a teacher," says Benway.

She's not alone in thinking that either.

"This is definitely, in my 25 years in public education, the first time I have ever had to deal with something like this," says Superintendent for Milton Town School District John Barone.

He says the boy attempted to attack a social worker at the school this week. To what extent, officials aren't saying.

"The staff member was able to get away and reported the incident to the principal," says Barone.

Police were notified right away and charged the teen.

Barone would not go into detail about the child's past because of confidentiality laws, but he did tell me the child was on the social worker's case load.

The student was not in school Friday and Barone says he won't be on Monday either. He says after that, he's not sure.

"It could range from a short term suspension from school to as far as a hearing with the school board for an expulsion hearing," explains Barone.

Though, he does say a punishment is in the near future.

"We will take action regardless of what the courts decide," says Barone.

Benway hopes the punishment won't be too lenient.

"He should be expelled. It should be a safe environment for students and teachers," says Benway.

The teen was arraigned in juvenile court Friday afternoon.
