South Burlington, Vermont - When you buy flowers for your sweetheart this Valentine's Day, some area florists say there is a chance you will be scammed.
"Whenever a middle man gets in between the florist and the consumer, bad things are going to happen," Co-owner of Chappell's Florist in South Burlington, Steve Juiffre said.
Here is what he is talking about.
When you search for Burlington florists on the web, some links to local florists will pop up. But, other sites called "gatherers" will too.
These sits do not belong to florists. All they do is show pictures of flower arrangements, many times at higher than retail prices. Then, when you buy from them, they send that order to a real florist to be completed, and pocket the change.
"They may even lists our schools and our funeral homes. But in reality, they're in Michigan or in Oregon, or someplace else," Juiffre said.
One Web site even has Chappell's address and phone number. But when you click on it, it brings you to Justflowers.com. That is a company based in Los Angeles.
So how do you avoid falling prey to these scams? Juiffre says check the "about us" section of the Web site to see if it has a local address and area code. Then call the phone number to verify it.
Because, if not...
"The product may not arrive on time or at all if there's not a florist in the area. They're most likely going to pay far more for that item than they would if they had bought it locally," Juiffre said.
Last year, Vermont passed a law preventing these "gatherer" sites from saying they are local florists. But, the Vermont Attorney General's office says the law is very easy to get around.
