Barre, Vermont - Some Vermont veterans impacted by Tropical Storm Irene are wondering where they can get state funding.
Vermont VFW Commander Ron Tallman thought money raised from the Phish and Grace Potter concerts in the fall would have been given out by now.
"My understanding is that there's a numerous amount of money out there, over a million dollars plus that is available for disaster relief. Everybody keeps hearing about that money but they can't seem to get to it," Tallman said.
The money went to Vermont's Long Term Disaster Relief Fund, which was formed by Governor Peter Shumlin in September.
The chairman of that committee, David Coates, says that money is being given out now through case managers.
There are 30 case managers spread throughout Vermont to help people get a piece of this more than $3 million fund. But, most of the case managers did not get up and running until three weeks ago and only $80,000 has been given out.
We asked Coates what is taking so long.
"Well one thing is FEMA is the beginning point and insurance," Coates said.
That means Irene victims must apply for FEMA funds, private insurance and even appeal to FEMA if they are denied funds before they can get state money. But if they're willing to wait.
"We're averaging something like between $6,000 and $10,000 per case," Coates said.
