Burlington, Vermont- The Food and Drug Administration found that 400 shades of lipstick from contain trace amounts of lead.
Lipstick is often a woman's favorite accessory, with hundreds of shades to pick from to stand out in a crowd.
According to the analysis there are three lipsticks that have the highest amount of lead.
The top lipstick with the most amount of lead is the shade 'Petal Pink,' made by Maybelline. The lipstick shade with the least amount of lead trace is 'Bahama Mama,' made by Wet' N Wild.
"We're learning the long term effects and the actual causes of having overdone metals in our beauty products why do we need them in there?" asks Justine Crosby, a stylist at Salon Cruz in Burlington. She says unfortunately the lead amounts probably won't stop most women from puckering up with their favorite shade.
"They wouldn't sacrifice their favorite lip color that they've been getting for however long from whatever major brand they've been using," says Crosby.
But there are other options. Crosby says there are several brands, like Senna, that they carry at Salon Cruz that cater specifically to not having any traces of lead.
"It allows us to have a natural a pure mineral pigment, that doesn't again provide any toxicity to the body," says Crosby.
However, the FDA says the amount of lead found in the lipsticks will not cause any harm to health.
