Cuomo Compromises On Teacher Evaluations

Posted: Updated:

Peru, New York - On Thursday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the New York State Education Department, and the State's largest teacher's union finally compromised on how to evaluate teachers.

Governor Cuomo says the evaluation system will hold, "teachers accountable for student achievement."

The system is based on a 100 point scale.

60 points are for teacher performance. That will be measured by administrators and trained evaluators watching teachers in the classroom. It will also be based on student and parent feedback.

The other 40 points evaluate teachers based on student achievement. That is measured by how well students do on State and local tests.

The whole point is to help kids succeed by rooting out bad teachers and rewarding good ones.

Kimberly Larsen, a parent at Peru High School, says it is about time.

"I think that sometimes tenure is not a good thing because you have teachers that should not be in the classroom if they're not willing to update and teach the current standard," Larsen said.

Cuomo is giving schools State-wide a year to adopt the evaluation system. If they do, they will get a share of $700 million in Federal and State funds through the Federal Race to the Top program. If schools choose not to adopt the system, they will not get any funds.
