VT. Embezzler Given More Time to Report to Prison

Posted: Updated:

BURLINGTON, Vermont- A former municipal utility manager in Vermont convicted of embezzling $1.6 million in customer funds has been given an extra week to report to prison. Former Hardwick Electric Department office manager Joyce Bellavance was sentenced last month to 3 1/2 years in prison.

She's now objecting to a plan that sends her to the Federal Correctional Institution in Waseca, Minn., to serve her sentence.  Federal Judge William Sessions II agreed Friday to give Bellavance until Feb. 28 to resolve the dispute.

Hardwick's attorney questioned why she wasn't assigned to a facility in Danbury, Conn., which Sessions had recommended and is closer to Bellavance's family.
